Concern over Valencia region cat boom

Postby Robin » Tue Oct 21, 2008 8:41 am

Experts say there will soon be more cats than dogs in the region.
Latest estimates say that there are 200,000 cats in the province of Valencia, almost as many as the 250,000 dogs, but the cats are said to be increasing at double the rate.

Most of the domestic cats are not vaccinated as they do not leave their homes, and local vets fear that if the boom continues they could pass on infections to humans. One of the most serious possible parasitic infections is toxoplasmosis which can affect the foetus in pregnant women following contact with cat urine.

For that reason the Valencia region has started a pioneering program to encourage owners to get their felines vaccinated.

The Valencian Community should impose the law of all the owners to have their animals sterelized, specially those who think that it is funny to see their cats room around their nearby residential areas....but what these people do not know is that these cats contagiate or are contagiated by the others that they meet or fight with, that they can cause car accidents, that dogs can kill them or else they can attach a dog and the list goes on, including getting pregnant or males going on heat and get females pregnant and voila! lots more kittens to suffer and to save and lots less people who are willing to donate all the time.
Please pass the word that these things do not happen, since this Govt. does not place the right measures.

Shell

Does it have to be regional government legislation or can Santa Pola Council pass a law for this area?
Cheers
