Hand Luggage

Postby cindi » Sat Sep 12, 2009 1:54 pm

Hi all travellers
We used Easyjet regularly and  noticed lately in Spain they are more strict with the size of the hand luggage. Many travellers were asked to put their cases in the gauge box and if too large they had to pay for case to go into the hold. The rule of one hand luggage is also applied strictly.

Cant say we noticed any difference on our last easyjet trip recently.

Did not notice any one asked to put bags in cage to check, maybe having a purge on the day you flew ?

Hand Luggage sizes (and a possible scam)

Postby Rich & Sue » Sat Sep 12, 2009 3:24 pm

To be honest we stuggled to get exactly the right size for the standards now being asked for.

I have just moved to a new "shell" style for our lot. The one airline (if challenged) we would struggle with now is BMI at 20mm think. They just dont exist that size.

But if you get a 55 x 45 x 23 you SHOULD just about get it into the frame.

Just out of interest I think I undearthed a potential scam with BMI at BHX last month.

When I found out that they had reduced there checked in allownace to 18kg - and loaded up the excessise baggage costs - I bought some good quality hand held scales to check them on.

Just to be doubly sure I took them into work and had them checked / calibrated in the metrology lab to ensure they were spot on @18kg and 10kg. They were within 5 grams at each point

Case was packed and checked and found to be 17.4 kg.

Gues what it was at BMI's checking (you guessed it) 18.8kg. They gave me a "you are only just inside the chargeable allowance speech" I then asked them to prove the calibration of the baggage scales.

They wouldnt of course. But I penned a note to BHX / BMI and suggested to them that they may be cashing in unlawfully and wondered if trading statndards needs to be contacted, I believe that they falesly collect dues from people (at £10 a kg) who probably were quite legally loaded to - say - 17.9 kg

Cant wait for the response !

For me, what is the worst about the hand luggage restrictions are people who are completely inconsiderate about other passengers.
Last week a couple at check-in had been discussing that they knew their case was 1cm oversize and that they were prepared to argue and dispute, which they did, whilst others behind them had to wait and wait their turn. Eventually they were forced to check the case in as hold luggage. They were sent to pay and when returning to check-in, went straight to the front.
They knew they would fall foul but couldn't care less for those being held up because of their complete ignorance and inconsideration. What is the word for them ???

I know one is Antler and another Samsonite Xlite (35 x 50 x 20 cm). Try their websites and look for Cabin and Hand Luggage.

This made me check on the Jet2 site for their current cabin baggage rules:

10kg, 50x38x26 (including wheels and handles)

I might have to go out and get a new bag now, and so far I have found this to fit:
