When I were a lad...

Postby Macmad » Mon Nov 02, 2009 9:19 pm

On my way to school I always pressed my nose up against the local jeweller's window.

The reason...well they had one of those Timex watches on display in a glass tank full of bubbling water.

Ticka- ticka Timex etc

One wonderful Christmas morning I opened a small box to find the aforementioned watch. Bliss (although shortlived...since the darn thing fell apart, literally, 6 months later).

Since that Christmas (long, long ago) I've had various marques gracing my wrist and tonight I began to ponder which first watch my fellow forum members had...and which watch they sport today.

Over to you guys...

Hi Richard,

I had a Timex too, and loved it.

I used to wear it in bed and marvel at the luminous green numerals. Well, that was until my big sister told me the luminous paint would make me sterile! She admitted many years later that she made it up.

I don't wear a watch anymore, I use my mobile for time keeping etc, and it's probably going to give me a brain tumour.

DOnt think i ever had a timex.

early days had casio and also a red led watch which i sold on ebay for much ore than I purchased it for 20 or so years later even though it did not work.

quite a few seikos and still do

some non branded

for a short while had a moon watch (a real one), only reason i got rid of it was i did not like to wind it every day.

the one I lusted after for years was a rado, purchased about 6 or 7 years ago, virtually indestructible but also very handsome

Was so long ago, I can't remember the make now. Did buy a cheap Casio for £9.95 in 1988. Was still going strong 20 years later. It actually cost me more in straps. Never quite understand why people pay mega bucks for some makes. They all tell the time. If you want an expensive bracelet then buy that.

The Timex self destructed as I was riding my bike.

I hit a largish bump in the road... the face and majority of its guts spilled into the road. My father didn't believe me and it was a loooong time before I got a replacement.

Casio? Always reminds me of John Candy in Trains, Planes & Automobiles. :D

I've gone through my share of Seiko and non descript digital watches as well as a couple of Tag Heuers (now gone)

Nowadays?

Occasional...21 year old Omega De Ville

Daytime...Rolex GMT Master II bi met

Evening ..Santos bi met

My first watch was pink. Pink face, pink strap! Absolutely no idea what make it was - just remember the pinkness of it!

Have a bit more taste these days. Cartier. Very elegant and understated (well, mine are!) and not a sign of pink anywhere! :D
Where shoes are concerned, need and want mean exactly the same!

My grandfather was a watchmaker, so after many visits to his shop as a child watching him and his staff repairing watches I became facinated with watches. The first watch I can actually remember having was a Micky Mouse watch - his arms were the hands. As a young teenager had Casio watches that seemed to have an alarm tune for every occasion! Now, and as influenced by my late grandfather, I appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into 'real' watches so I altenate between a Rolex Oyster Datejust and a Breitling Aerospace. I have had both for years and do have to restrain myself from buying any more - I could fill my house with watches! I plan to make both of these heirlooms as they should last forever
